The map
Phasi Charoen is a district on the Thonburi side of Bangkok, west of the Chao Phraya. Its defining line is Khlong Phasi Charoen, a long canal dug in the nineteenth century to link the river with the provinces to the west. On a map the canal runs almost straight through the district, and many streets and communities are organised along it.
Phet Kasem Road, one of the main routes out of Bangkok to the south-west, runs roughly parallel to it. Between the canal and the road, and on either side of them, lies a dense pattern of sois, housing and smaller waterways. The district still has canal-side homes and temples, although much of it is now urban.
A Phasi Charoen map poster shows the old water-based logic of Bangkok beside its modern road network. The long canal and the highway run like two parallel rules, and fine, irregular side streets fill the space between them. The result is structured, detailed and distinctly Thonburi.

The main road to the south-west runs parallel to the canal. It carries traffic out of the city, and on the map it forms a second strong axis.
Houses, temples and small streets line the waterways. Their fine, irregular grain contrasts with the wider modern roads that surround them.

Why Phasi Charoen
Phasi Charoen will mean a lot to people who grew up on the Thonburi side or remember boats on the khlong. The parallel lines of canal and road give it an unusual, orderly composition.
