The map

About this Thon Buri map poster

Thon Buri lies across the Chao Phraya River from central Bangkok, and its map is organised around water. The river bends in wide curves along its eastern edge, and from it a network of khlongs, the old canals, runs inland through neighbourhoods that were once reached almost entirely by boat. Many still are.

Between 1767 and 1782, after the fall of Ayutthaya, Thon Buri served as the capital of Siam under King Taksin, before the court moved across the river to what became Rattanakosin. The area remained a separate town for nearly two centuries and was formally merged into Bangkok only in 1971.

A Thon Buri map poster shows a very different Bangkok from the grid of modern boulevards on the east bank. Streets are narrower and more irregular, temples occupy large riverside plots, and the canals, especially Khlong Bangkok Noi and Khlong Bangkok Yai, draw long, curving lines. Wat Arun, on the riverbank, is its best-known landmark.

Why Thon Buri

A map that means something

Thon Buri is a place with a strong identity inside a huge city: older, more residential, still tied to its canals. Anyone who has lived or stayed on the west bank will recognise its bends in the river and the lines of its khlongs at once.

You can set the title, subtitle and coordinates line, perhaps noting its time as a capital, and choose from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Noir renders the river and canals as bold, dark lines.
