The map

About this Phra Phutthabat map poster

Phra Phutthabat lies in Saraburi Province, where the flat rice plain of central Thailand meets the first limestone hills to the northeast. The town takes its name from Wat Phra Phutthabat, the temple built around a large footprint believed to be that of the Buddha. It has been one of the most important pilgrimage sites in the country since the Ayutthaya period.

On the map the temple grounds form the clear centre of gravity. Streets, markets and houses gather around the complex, and the main roads lead toward Saraburi, Lopburi and the plain. Every year the temple hosts a large festival, and the streets around it are laid out to handle crowds of pilgrims.

Beyond the town, the flat land is divided into rice fields and water channels, while to the east the hills rise in rounded, wooded shapes. A Phra Phutthabat map poster frames the temple town within this setting, showing the plain, the hills and the roads that pilgrims have taken for centuries.
