The map

About this Pithorāgarh map poster

Pithorāgarh lies in the Soar Valley in eastern Uttarakhand, a bowl of level ground surrounded by Himalayan hills. On a map the town fills the valley floor and then spreads up the lower slopes. Winding roads reach it from all sides, curving along the contours, and the streets rarely run straight for long because the land keeps rising around them.

The town is sometimes called Little Kashmir for the look of its valley. It is the headquarters of its district in the Kumaon region and lies close to the border with Nepal. On clear days the high snow peaks of the range, including the Panchachuli massif, can be seen from the surrounding ridges. The town is also a stopping point for journeys deeper into the mountains.

A Pithorāgarh map poster shows a town held inside a ring of hills. Dense streets sit in the valley basin, looser lanes climb the slopes, and hairpin roads pull the composition outward. The result is organic and slightly irregular, a clear picture of how a mountain settlement grows where the ground allows.

01

Soar Valley bowl

The town fills a basin of level ground, and on the poster its dense centre sits clearly within the ring of hills that surrounds it.

02

Contour roads

Roads into the town wind around the hillsides in long bends and hairpins, drawing looping lines across the map's outer edges.

03

Climbing lanes

Neighbourhoods spread up the lower slopes along narrow, irregular lanes, giving the valley's rim a lighter, scattered texture.
