The map

About this Port-au-Prince map poster

Port-au-Prince sits at the eastern end of the Gulf of Gonâve, on a wide bay in the southern part of Haiti. From above, the city looks like an amphitheatre. The port and the flat downtown lie near the water, and the streets rise steeply up the hills behind them. Near the coast the grid is fairly regular. Higher up, the roads twist and turn to follow the ravines and slopes.

The Champ de Mars, a large open space in the centre, marks the heart of the old city near the site of the National Palace. From there, streets climb southeast toward Pétion-Ville, a hillside town with cooler air. On a Port-au-Prince map poster, the shape of the bay and the steep rise of the land form a dramatic, layered composition.

Port-au-Prince has been Haiti's capital since the eighteenth century and is the country's largest city. The earthquake of January 2010 caused great damage and loss of life, including the destruction of the National Palace and the cathedral. The city is still rebuilding. Its map records the lasting shape of the bay, the hills and the streets that connect them.

01

Bay crescent

The city curves around the eastern end of a wide bay. The shoreline gives the map a smooth, open edge and a clear sense of direction.

02

Hillside streets

Above the downtown, roads wind up steep slopes and ravines. The pattern becomes looser and more irregular as the land rises.

03

Champ de Mars

A large open space in the old centre stands out among the streets. It is a clear point of reference in the city's layout.
