The map
Potiskum is a town in Yobe State in northeastern Nigeria, on the flat, semi-arid plains of the Sahel belt. From above it spreads across open land along the highway that links Kano in the west with Maiduguri in the east. The road is the town's main axis, and neighbourhoods of compounds and lanes gather around it on every side.
The street pattern is dense and irregular at the centre, where family compounds and narrow lanes form a fine, maze-like texture. It loosens at the edges, where newer areas meet farmland. With little high ground to shape it, the town has a broad, roughly rounded outline, and tracks lead out across the savanna towards surrounding villages.
Potiskum is known for one of the largest cattle markets in West Africa, which draws traders and herders from across the region, and it has long been a commercial centre for Yobe State. A Potiskum map poster presents the town in clear, calm lines: the highway, the tight grain of the old quarters and the open plains beyond.
The main highway crosses the map as a long straight line. It forms the spine of the town and the route along which much of its trade has always moved.
Near the centre, compounds and narrow lanes create a fine, intricate texture that looks striking in black and white, like a woven pattern at the heart of the poster.
Around the edges the town thins into farmland and tracks across flat, dry country, giving the composition a wide margin of quiet open space.
