The map

About this Punaauia map poster

Punaauia follows the western shore of Tahiti, south of Papeete. From above it is a narrow ribbon of settlement. The coast road and the neighbourhoods beside it run along the water, and behind them the land rises quickly into ridges and deep valleys. Offshore, the reef draws a pale line that encloses the lagoon.

This long, thin shape explains a lot about the commune. Roads climb into the hills in short loops and dead ends, while the coast holds beaches, marinas and the main traffic artery. The Museum of Tahiti and the Islands stands on this shore and looks across the lagoon toward Moorea.

A Punaauia map poster works in the contrast between the busy shoreline and the empty mountain slopes. In black and white, the reef line and the coast turn into two parallel curves, and the valleys cut into the land.

01

Lagoon and reef

A barrier reef runs parallel to the coast a short distance offshore, and the calm lagoon lies inside it. The map shows it as a second, outer coastline.

02

Coastal corridor

Most of Punaauia's roads and buildings stay close to the shore. They form a long band squeezed between the water and the steep interior of Tahiti.

03

Valleys inland

Rivers have carved valleys that climb into the mountains. Only a few roads reach into them, so the upper part of the map stays open and quiet.

Why Punaauia

A map that means something

For people who have lived on Tahiti or visited it, the map shows the island from a different angle: the curve of the west coast, the reef and the view toward Moorea at sunset. It fits calm interiors and brings the ocean into a room without cliché.

Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates, perhaps with the date of a journey. Pick one of five styles, from Classic black & white to Blueprint or Sand. Download HD files for $9, or have a matte print shipped by a partner close to you.
