Red Wing lies on the west bank of the Mississippi in southeastern Minnesota, where the river widens toward Lake Pepin. The downtown grid sits on a narrow strip of flat land between the water and steep bluffs, and residential streets climb and curve up the slopes behind it.
Barn Bluff, a prominent rock ridge right beside downtown, is one of the town's defining features, and the river bridge to Wisconsin crosses nearby. Red Wing is known for its long industrial heritage, including the Red Wing Shoes company and Red Wing Stoneware, both named after the town.
