About this Resende map poster
Resende lies in the Paraíba Valley in the far west of Rio de Janeiro state, on the main corridor between Rio and São Paulo. From above, the city follows the Paraíba do Sul River, which winds through its centre. Neighbourhoods rise onto low hills on either bank, and to the north the land climbs steeply towards the Serra da Mantiqueira.
The city is home to the Academia Militar das Agulhas Negras, Brazil's army officer academy, whose large grounds are clearly visible on the map. Just beyond Resende rises Itatiaia National Park. It was established in 1937 as Brazil's first national park and includes the rocky summit of Pico das Agulhas Negras. The valley location has also made Resende an industrial centre, with motor-vehicle manufacturing in the region.
