It was founded in 1666 as a royal naval arsenal under Colbert, and its plan shows this clearly. A rigorous grid of straight streets and rectangular blocks sits on a bend of the river, with the former dockyards and slipways along the water's edge.
The Corderie Royale, the royal ropeworks, stretches along the riverbank for more than three hundred metres, a single long building that is easy to pick out on the map.
