About this Rügen map poster
Rügen is Germany's largest island. It lies off the Baltic coast of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and has one of the most intricate outlines in Europe. Shallow lagoons, called bodden, reach deep inside it, and the land between them is linked by thin strips of sand and moraine. The result looks less like one island than a cluster of peninsulas held together by narrow necks.
In the northeast, the Jasmund peninsula rises into beech forest and white chalk cliffs. The best known is the Königsstuhl, which Caspar David Friedrich's paintings made famous. Further north, Cape Arkona marks the island's tip with lighthouses above the sea. On the southeastern coast, resort towns such as Binz line a long curving beach.
