Rujewa is the main town of Mbarali district in Tanzania's Mbeya region. It sits on the Usangu plains, a broad lowland north of the southern highlands through which rivers flow toward the Great Ruaha. The flat terrain and available water have made the surroundings an important area for irrigated agriculture, especially rice.
The town itself is compact, organised along its main road with side streets branching off and a looser pattern of plots at the edges. Beyond the built-up area, the land opens into fields and small settlements connected by tracks.
