Grudziądz stands on the right bank of the Vistula in northern Poland, where the river runs wide and the eastern bank rises in a steep escarpment. The old town sits at the top of that slope. Its riverside edge is lined with tall brick granaries built into the hillside, one of the most recognisable waterfronts in the country.
On the map, the compact medieval streets of the old town contrast with the long straight line of the river and the broad floodplain on the opposite bank. North of the centre lies a large citadel, a Prussian fortress whose angular earthworks still show clearly in the street plan. Castle Hill marks the site of the former Teutonic stronghold.
