The map

About this Saint-Joseph map poster

Saint-Joseph lies in the centre of Martinique, set back from the coast north of Fort-de-France. On the map it has no shoreline to organise it. Its shape comes from hills and the valleys cut into them, with roads that follow the ridges and rivers instead of a planned grid. Settlements spread out in clusters along these routes.

The commune slopes up toward the island's forested mountain interior, and rivers from the higher ground cross its territory on their way to the lowlands. The land is green, steep in places, and farmed where the slopes allow. For many residents it combines rural life with an easy link to the capital.

A Saint-Joseph map poster turns this terrain into line work. Winding roads loop around hillsides, small neighbourhoods appear where the ground levels out, and waterways add thin, wandering threads. It is a very different Caribbean map from the coastal towns, and it rewards close looking with detail rather than a dramatic outline.

Ridge roads

Roads follow the high ground and curve back on themselves, drawing the looping, organic network typical of Martinique's hilly interior.

02

River valleys

Streams from the mountains cross the commune, and their narrow valleys set the direction of settlement and add fine lines to the map.

03

Scattered quarters

Instead of one dense centre, small hamlets and neighbourhoods sit spread across the slopes, giving the poster an even, distributed texture.
