About this Saint-Malo map poster
Saint-Malo sits at the mouth of the Rance on the north coast of Brittany. The old walled town, known as Intra-Muros, occupies a granite outcrop that was once an island and is now tied to the mainland. On a map its ramparts form a tight, fortified outline with a dense knot of narrow streets inside.
Beyond the walls the modern town spreads east and south, with long beaches running toward Paramé and harbour basins cut into the land between the old town and the port. Small islands lie just offshore, including the Grand Bé, where the writer Chateaubriand is buried and which can be reached on foot at low tide.
