The map

About this Sakon Nakhon map poster

Sakon Nakhon sits in the upper northeast of Thailand, on the western shore of Nong Han, the largest natural freshwater lake in the Isan region. On the map, the lake is impossible to miss. It is a broad open shape against the city's eastern edge, dotted with islands, while the streets form a fairly regular grid across the flat land to the west and north.

The city's best-known temple, Wat Phra That Choeng Chum, stands near the centre and is an important pilgrimage site for the region. The forested Phu Phan hills rise to the south. The province is also known for natural indigo dyeing, a craft now closely tied to the Sakon Nakhon name.

A Sakon Nakhon map poster is built on the contrast between the dense grid of the town and the wide, calm lake. The shoreline runs as a long, uneven line down one side, which makes the composition feel more open than most inland cities.

01

Nong Han lake

The lake covers a large area east of the city. Its irregular shoreline and small islands are the most striking natural feature on the map.

02

Central grid

The core of the city is laid out in a mostly rectangular pattern of streets. It is easy to follow and set slightly back from the lake shore.

03

Temple precinct

Wat Phra That Choeng Chum occupies a compound in the centre of the city. Its grounds appear as a clearly defined block among the surrounding streets.

Why Sakon Nakhon
