The map
Salamanca, in the Mexican state of Guanajuato, sits on the Lerma River in the fertile Bajío lowlands. From above, the river curves along the edge of the older town, while railway lines and highways cross the plain toward Celaya, Irapuato and León, placing the city on one of central Mexico's busiest corridors.
The historic centre is a compact grid around its plazas and churches. The former Augustinian convent is famous for its gilded carved altarpieces. In contrast, a large Pemex oil refinery fills a broad block of land nearby, its tanks and processing units forming a distinctive pattern of circles and rectangles that no residential district could produce.
A Salamanca map poster puts those two identities side by side: the fine colonial mesh and the industrial geometry, with the Lerma winding between farmland and neighbourhoods. Irrigation channels and field boundaries fill the outer edges, a reminder that the Bajío is agricultural country as much as an industrial one.
The Lerma winds along the town's edge in loose meanders, the main natural line in an otherwise flat landscape.
The refinery's circular tanks and gridded units form an unusual, almost graphic cluster that stands out clearly in monochrome.
Around the main plazas, short blocks and church precincts make up the historic core, including the former convent of San Agustín.

Why Salamanca
Salamanca belongs on the wall of people who grew up in the Bajío, worked at the refinery, or married in one of its old churches. The map shows the place as it actually is.
