About this Morelia map poster
Morelia was founded in 1541 as Valladolid and renamed in 1828 in honour of José María Morelos, the independence leader born here. Its historic centre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1991, is built almost entirely from pinkish cantera stone. On a map it appears as an orderly Spanish grid of long blocks, set on a gentle rise with the cathedral at its heart.
Avenida Madero runs east to west through the centre like a spine, passing the cathedral and its plazas before continuing out toward newer districts. To the east, the colonial aqueduct, with more than two hundred arches, follows an avenue into town. Beyond the old core, the grid loosens into curving residential streets, ring roads and the green slopes that rise to the south.

In black and white the colour of the stone disappears, but the proportions remain: the regular blocks, the long axis of Madero, and the aqueduct leading in from the east, drawn with the same thin stroke as every street.
