About this Sambizanga map poster
Sambizanga is one of the older districts of Luanda, in the north of the Angolan capital close to the city's port. On a map it appears as a tightly packed urban fabric where formal avenues meet neighbourhoods of irregular lanes and closely built houses, the informal settlements known locally as musseques. The pattern is dense and fine-grained, quite unlike the planned blocks of the colonial centre nearby.
The district holds a particular place in Angolan culture. Sarah Maldoror's 1972 film Sambizanga, set at the start of the armed struggle against colonial rule, took its name from the neighbourhood, and the area remains closely tied to that period of the country's history. Today it is also shaped by port traffic and the large roads that run along its edges.
