The map
San Gabriel grew around Mission San Gabriel Arcángel, founded in 1771 as one of the early Spanish missions in California. The mission compound and the nearby streets form the oldest part of the city, while the rest follows the long, regular blocks typical of the San Gabriel Valley east of Los Angeles.
The city has an important Chinese American and wider Asian American community, and its commercial boulevards are known across Southern California for restaurants and shops. To the north, the San Gabriel Mountains rise above the valley, while freeways and wide arterial roads connect San Gabriel with neighbouring cities.
A San Gabriel map poster shows how one of the oldest settlements in the Los Angeles area fits into its modern surroundings. The mission district adds a slight irregularity to an otherwise orderly grid, and the major boulevards create strong lines across the map, framing the dense residential streets between them.
Mission San Gabriel Arcángel and the streets around it form the historic heart of the city, where the grid bends slightly around older property lines.
Wide east–west and north–south boulevards cross the city, lined with restaurants and shops, and stand out as strong, straight lines on the map.
Between the main roads, long blocks of homes create a steady, even rhythm typical of the San Gabriel Valley suburbs.
