The map

About this San Juan map poster

San Juan begins on a narrow islet at the entrance to San Juan Bay, where the old walled city occupies the western tip. On a map, Old San Juan is a compact grid of short streets enclosed by fortifications, with the headland of El Morro projecting toward the Atlantic and Castillo San Cristóbal guarding the landward side. Its street pattern has changed little in centuries.

East of the old town, the city spreads across bridges and causeways into Condado and Santurce, and along the beaches of Ocean Park toward Isla Verde. Lagoons, including the Condado Lagoon and the larger San José Lagoon, break the urban fabric into distinct pieces. A San Juan map poster shows this watery structure clearly, with Hato Rey and Río Piedras further inland.

Founded in the early sixteenth century, San Juan is one of the oldest cities established by Europeans in the Americas, and its fortifications are part of a UNESCO World Heritage site. The streets of the old town are paved with bluish stones, and the capital remains the political and economic centre of Puerto Rico.

Old San Juan

A dense grid on the western end of the islet, ringed by walls and forts. From above it reads as a small, intricate block set against open water.

02

El Morro

The fortress occupies a broad green headland at the mouth of the bay, a wide open space on the map that ends in angular bastions.

03

The lagoons

Condado and San José lagoons cut into the city, separating districts with irregular shorelines and connecting channels that give the map its soft interior shapes.
