The map

About this Sankt Pölten map poster

Sankt Pölten lies in the Traisen valley west of Vienna and has been the capital of Lower Austria since 1986. From above, the old town appears as a compact oval of streets and squares, surrounded by a ring of wider roads marking the former fortifications. The Traisen river runs along its eastern edge, with the railway and newer districts beyond.

The town received its charter in 1159, often cited as the oldest surviving town charter in Austria. Its centre is known for baroque façades, the cathedral and the architect Jakob Prandtauer, who worked here. In contrast, the government quarter built along the river in the 1990s adds a distinctly modern section to the map.

A Sankt Pölten map poster brings together these different eras. The dense, irregular lanes of the old town sit within a clear ring, the river curves beside it, and the large, orderly blocks of the government quarter form a new focal point. Around them, residential districts and railway lines fill the frame.
