About this Santiniketan map poster

Santiniketan began in the 1860s as a quiet ashram that Debendranath Tagore set up on open land in Birbhum, West Bengal. His son Rabindranath turned it into a school and, in 1921, founded Visva-Bharati University there. On a map it reads less like a town than a campus that grew outward. Its buildings are scattered among groves and linked by unhurried lanes instead of a formal grid.

The streets curve around compounds, fields and clusters of low buildings, and the railway at neighbouring Bolpur draws a firm line close by. Beyond the built edge the drawing thins into open country, with the eroded laterite ground locals call khoai and the small Kopai river winding through the landscape. The spaces between the lines matter as much as the lines on this map.

In 2023 Santiniketan was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognised for Tagore's idea of learning in close contact with nature, where classes were often held outdoors under trees. A Santiniketan map poster shows that relationship in line work: a thin network of roads holding gardens, courtyards and institutions together, drawn with the restraint the place itself is known for.

01

Visva-Bharati campus

The university grounds form the core of the map, a spread of compounds and paths where buildings stand apart from one another and open ground fills the gaps between them.

02

Bolpur railway line

The rail line through neighbouring Bolpur gives the composition a straight, steady edge that contrasts with the soft, wandering lanes of the campus settlement beside it.

03

Open country edges

Around the settlement the street network fades quickly into fields and red-earth terrain. That leaves generous white space, so the small cluster of roads reads clearly.

Why Santiniketan

A map that means something

For alumni, visitors to the Poush Mela and readers of Tagore, this map records a place known for its ideas as much as its buildings. It suits a study or a reading corner, where its sparse lines sit quietly beside a shelf of books.

Add your own title, a subtitle such as the years you studied there, and an edited coordinates line. Then choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. The $9 HD download covers six print sizes, or you can order a matte print with an optional wooden frame.
