The map

About this Shirakawa map poster

Shirakawa lies in southern Fukushima Prefecture, where the Kanto plain gives way to the Tohoku region. For centuries it marked the traditional gateway to the north, and the historic Shirakawa barrier checkpoint is famous in Japanese poetry. The town sits in a basin crossed by the Abukuma River, with hills rising on several sides.

At its centre are the grounds of Komine Castle, whose restored keep stands near the railway station. Southeast of the town lies Nanko Park, created in 1801 by the lord Matsudaira Sadanobu and often described as one of the oldest public parks in Japan. The Tohoku Shinkansen stops at Shin-Shirakawa station, on the town's western side.

A Shirakawa map poster shows the layers of a castle town: the castle grounds near the old core, the railway lines, the river and the pond at Nanko Park. It is a compact map with a long story behind it.

Komine Castle

The castle grounds sit close to Shirakawa station, with walls and moats forming a distinct shape at the centre of the town and a reminder of its role as a feudal seat.

02

Nanko Park

Established in 1801 around a large pond, Nanko Park is regarded as one of Japan's earliest public parks. Its water and gardens stand out clearly on the map.

03

Abukuma River

The river runs through the Shirakawa area on its way north through Fukushima, adding a gentle, winding line to the composition.

Why Shirakawa

A map that means something

For people who grew up in Shirakawa, or who know it as the start of the road north, a map of the town carries a quiet sense of history. The spare design suits Japanese interiors particularly well.

Change the title and subtitle to add a name or date, and edit the coordinates line. Five styles are available: Classic black and white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. Paper and Sand bring out the soft tones of the castle town.
