Sierre lies in the central Valais, on the Rhône river in southern Switzerland. The town spreads across the valley floor and onto vineyard slopes, where the land rises toward the mountains. On a map, the Rhône cuts across the valley, while small rounded hills, formed by an ancient landslide, give the terrain around the town an unusual, uneven texture.
Sierre is often described as one of the sunniest towns in Switzerland, and wine has long been central to its economy. It sits near the language border of Valais, where French gives way to German. The poet Rainer Maria Rilke spent his final years nearby, at the Château de Muzot above the town.
