The map

About this Sindelfingen map poster

Sindelfingen lies southwest of Stuttgart in Baden-Württemberg and has grown together with neighbouring Böblingen into one continuous urban area. At its heart is a small old town of half-timbered houses around the Romanesque Martinskirche, whose origins go back to the eleventh century. From above, that compact centre is surrounded by newer residential districts, green spaces and wide roads.

The largest single shape on the map is the Mercedes-Benz plant, which has operated here for more than a century and covers a vast area of halls, rail sidings and roads. The A81 motorway runs along the edge of the town, and the Klostersee, a small lake near the old centre, adds a patch of open water amid the streets.

A Sindelfingen map poster shows the contrast between medieval scale and industrial scale in the same frame. The tight lanes of the old town, the long geometric blocks of the factory and the forests at the edges of the district make a layered composition that is recognisably German and specifically Swabian, a town shaped equally by tradition and by engineering.
