The map
Sirs al Layyānah is a town in Monufia Governorate, in the Nile Delta between the Rosetta and Damietta branches of the river. The land around it is completely flat and intensively farmed. On a map, the fields are divided into long, narrow strips, and irrigation canals and drainage channels run through them in straight lines.
The town itself forms a dense core surrounded by this agricultural landscape. Older quarters have tight, irregular lanes. Newer growth tends to follow the roads and canals leading out toward neighbouring villages and towns, and it gradually spreads along them into the fields.
A Sirs al Layyānah map poster shows the relationship between a delta town and the land that supports it. The compact core, the canals and the pattern of fields together make an image that is both simple and specific. The canals give the sheet a clear structure, and the town's streets add a dense cluster of detail at the centre.

The older centre forms a dense knot of narrow, irregular streets. On the map it clearly contrasts with the open field pattern around it.
Newer building follows the roads and canal banks leading out of town. These arms of development reach into the surrounding farmland.
