Śniardwy is the largest lake in Poland, part of the Great Masurian Lakes system in the northeast of the country. Its outline is broad and irregular, with bays, peninsulas and several islands, and it connects through channels and smaller lakes to a larger network used for sailing and canoeing.
The lake is relatively shallow for its size, and its open water can become rough in strong winds, which makes it well known among sailors. Nearby towns include Mikołajki to the northwest and Pisz to the southeast, both gateways to the Masurian lake district.
