The map

About this Soest map poster

Soest spreads across the northern edge of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug, where sandy woodland meets the flat, wet meadows of the Eem valley. The map shows a mostly residential town of long, leafy streets. The railway between Utrecht and Baarn runs through it, with several stations along the way. To the north the streets give way to narrow polder plots and ditches, and to the south to forest paths.

On the road toward Baarn stands Soestdijk Palace, for decades the home of Queen Juliana and Prince Bernhard. Soesterberg is part of the municipality, and its former air base now houses the National Military Museum. Between them lie the Soesterduinen, one of the larger areas of open drift sand in the country. On the map they show as a pale, almost empty patch among the trees.

A Soest map poster is less about a dense centre than about texture. Villa streets curve through the woods, the old core sits around the medieval church, straight ditches cross the northern polder, and open dunes lie to the south. In black and white these contrasts make a surprisingly rich drawing for a town of this size.

01

Soesterduinen drift sands

A wide stretch of open sand surrounded by forest. On the map it is a near-blank clearing that stands out sharply against the fine lines of the nearby streets.

02

Eem polder edge

North of the town, long straight ditches divide the meadows into narrow strips. This classic Dutch pattern adds precise parallel lines to the top of the sheet.

03

Soestdijk and Soesterberg

The palace grounds on the road to Baarn and the former air base at Soesterberg add large, distinctive open shapes to an otherwise residential street pattern.
