The map
Sokhumi lies on the Black Sea coast of Abkhazia, on a wide bay backed by the foothills of the Caucasus. The map is organised by the shoreline. A long seafront road and promenade follow the curve of the bay, and the city centre spreads out behind them in a fairly regular grid, before the streets begin to climb and bend as the ground rises inland.
The city's botanical garden, founded in the nineteenth century, is one of the oldest in the Caucasus, and its green area stands out near the centre. The primate research institute, established in the Soviet period, is another well-known institution. Small rivers come down from the hills and reach the sea through the city, adding thin lines across the grid.
A Sokhumi map poster shows the classic structure of a southern resort city: the sea on one side, the mountains on the other and the grid in between. In monochrome, the smooth line of the bay and the terraced streets above it are clearly readable, which suits anyone who has walked that seafront and remembers the place well.
The shoreline curves broadly along the whole frame. The seafront road runs parallel to it and gives the city a strong, graceful edge.
Behind the waterfront, the older centre is laid out in a regular grid of streets. It becomes the most orderly and densely drawn part of the print.
Further inland, roads start to wind as they climb into the foothills. The grid dissolves into looser, curving lines toward the upper edge.
