The map

About this Sokoni map poster

Sokoni lies in the Zanzibar Central/South region, on the southern part of Unguja, the main island of the Zanzibar archipelago. From above it does not look like a planned town. Instead you see a loose spread of lanes and footpaths among plots and trees, with the coast not far away and open ground between the villages.

This part of the island has shallow soils over old coral, which locals call coral rag. The land is used for small farms, and the villages are spaced out along the roads that link them. On a map the result is sparse and open, very different from the packed alleys of Stone Town further north.

A Sokoni map poster shows this quiet, rural side of Zanzibar. With so few lines it has a lot of white space. The road network reads almost like a drawing, and if the frame reaches the coast, the long edge of the Indian Ocean gives the composition a strong horizon.

01

Island road links

The main roads in southern Unguja tie the villages to each other and to the towns further north, and they form the clearest lines on the map.

02

Scattered lanes

Between the main roads, small tracks branch out irregularly to homes and fields, making a fine, uneven web instead of a grid.

03

Nearby coastline

The Indian Ocean shore lies within reach of a wider frame. Its broken coral edge gives the poster a natural boundary and a sense of the island's shape.
