The map

About this Solothurn map poster

Solothurn sits on the Aare between Biel and Olten, at the foot of the Weissenstein ridge of the Jura. The old town lies mainly on the north bank, a compact block of streets and squares that once sat inside a system of star-shaped fortifications. Parts of those ramparts survive, and on the map the green spaces where they stood still hint at their angular outline.

Solothurn is often called the most beautiful baroque town in Switzerland, and its cathedral of St. Ursus closes one end of the main street with a broad flight of steps. The town is also known for its fondness for the number eleven, echoed in its churches, fountains and towers. Bridges cross the Aare to the smaller southern quarter.

A Solothurn map poster shows the old town as a tight, clearly bounded core, the river bending past it, and newer districts spreading across the plain. With the Jura rising to the north, it forms one of the more balanced small-city compositions in Switzerland, well suited to a clean black-and-white print.

Traces of ramparts

Remnants and outlines of the old star-shaped fortifications surround the old town, their angles still visible in parks and street lines around the centre.

St. Ursus Cathedral

The baroque cathedral with its wide steps anchors the eastern end of the old town and is one of the defining landmarks of Solothurn's skyline.
