The map
Somoto is the capital of the Madriz department in the highlands of northern Nicaragua, close to the border with Honduras. The town sits in a valley surrounded by hills, and its map shows a compact colonial grid of square blocks around a central park and church.
The Pan-American Highway passes near the town on its way to the border crossing, giving the plan a strong diagonal line. Beyond the streets, the land climbs into hills cut by streams and farm tracks, with small communities scattered across the slopes.
A Somoto map poster reflects a town known well beyond its size. Nearby is the Somoto Canyon, a narrow gorge near the source of the Coco River that attracts hikers and swimmers, and the town is famous across Nicaragua for its rosquillas, baked corn biscuits sold far from Madriz.
Square blocks spread out from the central park and church, a regular Spanish colonial plan that gives the centre of the map a steady rhythm.
The highway runs past town towards the Honduran border, a long confident line that contrasts with the short blocks of the historic centre.
Somoto sits on lower ground ringed by hills, and streams and tracks winding across the slopes give the edges of the poster a looser texture.

Why Somoto
Somoto suits those who grew up in Madriz, travellers who hiked the canyon, and anyone who likes the calm order of a highland colonial town. The map is small in scale but full of character.
Add your own title, a subtitle like a family name or travel date, and edit the coordinates line. Paper gives the colonial grid a warm, historic feel, while Noir makes the streets glow against the darker hills.
