The map

About this Stará Ľubovňa map poster

Seen from above, Stará Ľubovňa sits in a broad bend of country where the Poprad valley opens between forested hills. The older core forms a tight cluster around an elongated square, and newer housing and industrial blocks fan out along the roads leading north and south. The river and its tributaries draw soft curves through the lower ground, giving the map a natural edge on one side.

The most recognisable feature is the hill north of town, crowned by Ľubovňa Castle, with an open-air museum of wooden folk architecture beneath it. For more than three centuries the town belonged to the group of Spiš towns pledged to the Polish crown, and during the Swedish wars of the seventeenth century the Polish crown jewels were hidden at the castle for safekeeping.

A Stará Ľubovňa map poster shows how this history sits in the terrain: a small grid of streets, a river valley, a fortified summit and a ring of green hills pressing in from every direction. In black and white, the contour of the land and the density of the old centre read clearly, without the colour of a tourist map getting in the way.

01

Castle on the hill

The castle rises on a wooded ridge just outside the built-up area, its approach roads winding up the slope and standing apart from the orderly streets below.

02

Poprad valley

The Poprad River runs through the valley close to town, its meanders and floodplain setting a soft organic line against the straighter streets of the settlement.

03

Old town square

The historic centre is organised around a long market square, a shape typical of Spiš towns and easy to pick out as the densest part of the map.
