The map

About this Sterling Heights map poster

Sterling Heights, in Macomb County north of Detroit, is built on the classic mile-road survey of southeastern Michigan. Major arteries run at one-mile intervals east–west and north–south, dividing the city into large squares. Inside each square the pattern changes completely, with curving subdivision streets, loops and cul-de-sacs laid out from the 1960s onward.

The Clinton River crosses the city diagonally, and its wooded floodplain forms a green ribbon through the grid. Sterling Heights is also an automotive city, home to a major assembly plant and several engineering and defence operations, whose large sites appear on the map as big blank blocks along the main roads.

A Sterling Heights map poster makes the logic of the American suburb visible: a strict frame of section-line roads filled with softer, inward-facing street designs. The river is the one element that ignores the grid. It meanders through the squares, and parks and trails follow it.

Mile-road grid

Arterial roads spaced a mile apart form a regular lattice across the city, a strong structure that frames every neighbourhood.

02

Clinton River corridor

The river cuts diagonally through the grid, bordered by parkland and trails, and is the only major line on the map that curves freely.

03

Subdivision patterns

Within each mile square, looping streets and cul-de-sacs create varied, almost ornamental shapes that reward close viewing.
