The map

About this Tarsus map poster

Tarsus lies on the fertile Çukurova plain in southern Turkey, a few kilometres inland from the Mediterranean between Mersin and Adana. The land is almost perfectly flat, so the city's shape is defined by its roads and waterways rather than by hills, with a dense older core surrounded by newer neighbourhoods and irrigated farmland.

The Berdan River, known in antiquity as the Cydnus, runs along the eastern side of the city and drops over a small waterfall at its northern edge. Canals and irrigation channels branch across the surrounding fields, and the main highway and railway between Mersin and Adana pass close by, running east–west across the plain.

Few cities of this size carry such a long record. Tarsus is known as the birthplace of the Apostle Paul, and it was here that Cleopatra is said to have sailed up the Cydnus to meet Mark Antony. A Tarsus map poster shows the modern street plan laid over this ancient site.

01

Berdan River

The river crosses the eastern side of the city from north to south, its course and waterfall adding a natural line to an otherwise flat, gridded plain.

02

Historic core

Narrow, irregular streets around the old centre contrast with the straighter roads of newer districts, marking where the ancient city has been continuously built upon.

03

Çukurova farmland

Beyond the built-up edge, rectangular fields and irrigation channels create a fine, even texture that frames the city on every side.
