The map

About this Thirunavaya map poster

Thirunavaya is in the Malappuram district of Kerala, on the northern bank of the Bharathappuzha, the longest river in the state. The river shapes the map. Its wide, sandy bed runs across the frame, and the settlement lies along its banks. Unlike a compact town, it spreads out in the typical Kerala pattern, with houses scattered among trees and small fields.

Thirunavaya is historically important as the site of the Mamankam, a great festival and assembly held here centuries ago, associated with the Zamorin rulers of Calicut. The Navamukunda temple on the riverbank is one of the region's well-known shrines. Both reflect the river's long role as a sacred and political gathering place.

A Thirunavaya map poster sets the broad river channel against a fine network of lanes that wind between house plots and groves. It is a soft, flowing composition without a hard centre, and it reads very differently from a planned city. It is an evocative print for anyone with ties to the Bharathappuzha valley.

01

Bharathappuzha river

The wide riverbed runs along the settlement. With its channels and sandbanks, it is the largest and most striking feature on the poster.

02

Riverside temple

The Navamukunda temple stands close to the bank. It marks the long sacred significance of this stretch of the river.

03

Dispersed lanes

Narrow roads meander between homesteads and coconut groves. They create a loose, organic network typical of rural Kerala.

Why Thirunavaya
