The map
Tía Juana lies on the eastern shore of Lake Maracaibo in the state of Zulia, Venezuela, in the oil-producing region known as the Costa Oriental del Lago. From above, the town follows the shoreline, with streets and neighbourhoods arranged along the lake and flat country stretching inland behind them.
Oil has shaped this coast for about a century. The fields along the eastern shore were among the most productive in Venezuela, and towns like Tía Juana grew around oil camps, pipelines and installations. Long-term extraction caused the land along parts of the shore to subside, and a coastal protection dike was built to hold back the lake.
A Tía Juana map poster shows a town defined by one long edge. The lake occupies a large part of the frame as open space, while streets, industrial areas and roads fill the land side. The contrast is strong, and it gives the design a clear horizon that suits black and white particularly well.
The broad lake forms the western edge of the map. Tía Juana's streets and roads run parallel to the shoreline for much of their length.
The town grew with the oil industry of the eastern shore. Planned camps, industrial sites and service roads left distinct, regular shapes in the street pattern.
Land subsidence caused by oil extraction led to a long protective dike along parts of the eastern shore, a rare man-made edge between town and lake.
