Tapolca sits in a broad basin a few kilometres north of Lake Balaton's shore. From above, the old centre is a knot of short, curving streets around a small pond. Newer housing and the railway spread out on flatter ground to the edges, and orchards and vineyards run toward the surrounding hills.
The town is best known for its lake cave, where visitors travel by boat through flooded passages beneath the centre. Just above it is the Malom-tó, the mill pond, whose water shapes the heart of the town plan. On the horizon rise the table mountains of the Tapolca basin, old volcanic buttes including Badacsony and Szent György-hegy.
