The map

About this Tönisvorst map poster

Tönisvorst was formed in 1970 when St. Tönis and Vorst were merged, and the map still shows two distinct settlements. St. Tönis, the larger, lies close to the western edge of Krefeld. Vorst sits further west, and a stretch of open fields separates the two. Each has its own centre, its own church and its own small network of streets.

The land is typical Lower Rhine country: flat, open and crossed by straight farm roads and lines of trees. Orchards and fruit growing have long been part of the local economy, and the countryside between the two centres keeps an agricultural feel. Housing estates spread outward from both cores in regular blocks.

A Tönisvorst map poster tells a story of two towns sharing one name. The composition balances two knots of streets across a quiet rural plain, a structure that is unusual on the page and easy for residents to read.

01

St. Tönis core

The larger centre sits right against Krefeld, its streets radiating from an old core and spreading into post-war housing estates.

02

Vorst village

To the west, Vorst forms a smaller, separate cluster around its own centre, clearly distinct on the map.

03

Open farmland

Fields, orchards and straight country roads fill the space between the two centres, keeping them visibly apart.
