The map

About this Tōkai map poster

Tōkai lies just south of Nagoya in Aichi, along the eastern shore of Ise Bay at the base of the Chita Peninsula. On a map, the city falls into two clear parts. The coastal strip is made of large reclaimed industrial blocks with straight edges and docks, while inland, residential areas spread over low hills in a dense, irregular street pattern.

Rail lines and main roads run north to south, parallel to the coast, linking the city with central Nagoya and the rest of the peninsula. Small rivers and channels cross the land toward the bay, dividing the residential districts into separate neighbourhoods.

The city is known for its large steelworks, which occupy much of the reclaimed waterfront, and for its role in the industrial belt around Nagoya. A Tōkai map poster captures the contrast between the geometric industrial coast and the fine suburban texture behind it, a composition that works especially well in black and white.

01

Reclaimed industrial coast

Along the bay, large rectangular blocks of reclaimed land with straight edges and docks form a bold geometric band that dominates the western edge of the map.

02

Hillside residential grain

Inland, streets follow the low hills in a dense, irregular pattern, giving the eastern side of the map a fine, detailed texture.

03

North–south corridors

Rail lines and main roads run parallel to the coast, connecting Tōkai to Nagoya and stitching the industrial and residential parts together.
