About this Tokushima map poster
Tokushima is the capital of Tokushima prefecture on the eastern side of Shikoku, built on the delta where the Yoshino River meets the sea. On a map, water runs through the whole city. The Shinmachi River and other channels divide the centre into islands, and the wide Yoshino flows along the northern edge before reaching the coast.
Mount Bizan rises right at the western side of the centre, a wooded hill with a ropeway to its summit. The city is famous across Japan for Awa Odori, a dance festival held each August, when groups dance through the streets. Tokushima is also the starting point for many pilgrims on the Shikoku 88-temple route.
A Tokushima map poster shows a compact centre wrapped in rivers, with the station and the former castle grounds at its heart and the hill as an empty green shape to the west. The street grid shifts direction from island to island, and bridges tie them together. Along the coast, the delta opens toward the sea.
