Ribbon-shaped city
Squeezed by the mountains, the city runs along its valley in a long band, only a few blocks wide in places, giving the map an unusual, elongated composition.

The map
Trujillo is the capital of Trujillo State in the Venezuelan Andes. Hemmed in by mountains, the city could only grow along the floor and lower slopes of its valley, and on a map it appears as a long, thin strip of streets, with the colonial centre at its core and newer districts stretching out along the main road.
The city was moved several times in its early years after its founding in the sixteenth century, which earned it the nickname ciudad portátil, the portable city. In 1813 Simón Bolívar issued his Decree of War to the Death here, and the building where he signed it still stands in the historic centre.
On a hill above the city stands the Monument to the Virgin of Peace, one of the tallest statues in Latin America, reached by a winding mountain road. A Trujillo map poster shows the tension between terrain and town, a narrow ribbon of streets with ridges pressing in on both sides and switchback roads climbing away from them.

At the core, a grid of colonial streets surrounds the main square and cathedral, including the house where Bolívar signed his decree of 1813.
A winding road climbs from the city to the Monument to the Virgin of Peace, its switchbacks tracing a looping line on the slopes above the valley.
