The map

About this Trutnov map poster

Trutnov sits in the valley of the Úpa River in north-eastern Bohemia, at the foot of the Krkonoše, the Giant Mountains. The old town occupies higher ground on the river's bank, with the arcaded main square at its centre, and the rest of the town spreads along the valley and up the surrounding slopes. From above, the pattern is shaped by terrain: streets follow contour lines and climb in curves.

The town has a long military memory. In June 1866, during the Austro-Prussian War, the Battle of Trutnov was fought on the hills nearby, and a memorial on Šibeník hill commemorates it. Later, Trutnov became a textile centre, with mills along the river. Today it is also known for its open-air music festival and as a gateway to the Krkonoše mountain resorts.

A Trutnov map poster reads almost like a relief map even without shading. The river cuts a clear line through the valley, the old town forms a compact oval of short streets around the square, and housing estates sit on the slopes above. Forested hills surround everything, leaving the town as a clearly defined shape in the landscape.

01

Krakonošovo náměstí

The main square is named after Krakonoš, the mountain spirit of local legend, and forms the centre of the compact old town, lined with arcaded houses.

02

The Úpa valley

The river flows through town from the mountains, its course shadowed by roads, the railway and former mill buildings, dividing the valley floor into narrow bands.

03

Hillside estates

Residential districts climb the slopes around the centre, where streets curve to follow the terrain and give the map a looser, layered look.

Why Trutnov

A map that means something

Trutnov is a place people come back to, for the mountains, the festival or family. A map of the town is a reminder of the valley and the square, and it suits anyone who has set out into the Krkonoše from here or spent a childhood between these hills.

Adjust the title and subtitle, perhaps adding a Czech phrase or a date, and pick from five styles. Noir and Blueprint suit mountain towns particularly well. Digital files include 30×40 cm, 50×70 cm, A3, A2, 18×24″ and 24×36″ at 300 DPI.
