The map

About this Tsurusaki map poster

Tsurusaki is in the eastern part of Oita city, on the southern shore of Beppu Bay in Kyushu. From above, it sits between the lower reaches of the Oita and Ono rivers, two broad channels that cross the plain to the sea. Residential streets fill the land between them in a close, fine-grained pattern.

Along the shore the coastline is straight and angular. Large blocks of reclaimed land run out into the bay and hold the heavy industry of the Oita coastal zone. The contrast between those big geometric piers and the small streets inland is the most striking thing about the map.

The district is known for the Tsurusaki Odori, a Bon festival dance with a long history, performed each summer and recognised as an important folk tradition. A Tsurusaki map poster shows a place defined by its rivers, its made-made shoreline and the dense neighbourhoods in between.

01

Two river mouths

The Oita and Ono rivers reach the bay close to each other, framing the district with two wide bands of water that cut across the poster.

02

Reclaimed shoreline

Flat industrial land projects into Beppu Bay in hard, straight-edged shapes, a strong graphic element against the curved river banks.

03

Fine residential grain

Inland, narrow streets and small blocks fill the space between the rivers, a fine texture typical of Japanese towns.

Why Tsurusaki

A map that means something

For people who grew up in Tsurusaki or worked on the bay, the map shows home in its simplest outline: two rivers, the shore, and the streets in between. It also suits anyone who likes the look of industrial coastlines.

The title, subtitle and coordinates line are yours to change, for example with a family name, the year you moved, or the date of a festival. Pick Classic black and white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand.
