About this Tukuyu map poster
Tukuyu is the main town of Rungwe District in the Southern Highlands of Tanzania, and it sits in some of the country's wettest and most fertile hill country. The map shows a compact centre on a ridge with roads dropping away in curves on all sides, following the folds of steep, green terrain.
Under German colonial rule the town was called Neu Langenburg, and it served as an administrative post for the region. Today it is surrounded by tea estates, banana groves and smallholdings, and the volcanic mass of Mount Rungwe rises to the north. The rich soils and high rainfall explain the dense patchwork of cultivation around the town.
