The map

About this Ürümqi map poster

Ürümqi stretches north to south along a broad valley that opens out of the Tian Shan mountains, so on a map the city is fairly narrow at its southern end and widens as it reaches the plains to the north. Major roads follow that same axis, and the grid between them is organised around a handful of long avenues running out of the mountains.

In the middle of the city stands Hongshan, or Red Hill, a small rocky ridge with a pagoda on its crest that has long served as a symbol of the city. Around it the streets bend and part, making one of the few irregular shapes in an otherwise orderly plan. To the southeast, the ranges rise toward the snow-covered peak of Bogda Feng.

The capital of Xinjiang is often described as the city farthest from any ocean, which gives an Ürümqi map poster an unusual kind of quiet: no coastline and no great river, only streets, ridges and the foothills of one of Asia's major mountain systems. It is a poster defined by its land rather than its water.

01

Red Hill

Hongshan rises above the city centre with a small pagoda on top, its rocky outline breaking the regular grid and anchoring the whole composition.

02

North-south valley

The city follows a long corridor out of the mountains, giving the poster a strong vertical direction, with major roads running from the foothills down to the plain.

03

Tian Shan foothills

The southern edge of the map climbs toward the mountains, where the street pattern thins and winds before giving way to open slopes.
