About this Utena map poster
Utena is the main town of the Aukštaitija lake district in northeastern Lithuania, and on a map it is framed by water. Small lakes lie close to its edges, and the Krašuona river runs through the town. The older centre is compact, and housing districts from the Soviet era and later extend around it in larger blocks.
Utena is one of the oldest towns in Lithuania, mentioned in a document from the thirteenth century. Its name is widely associated with the Utenos brewery, whose beer is sold across the country. Today the town combines a modest historic core with industrial zones on its outskirts and forest that begins just past the last streets.
Seen from above, the map alternates between built-up areas and irregular pockets of water and woodland, an unusually varied texture for a town of its size.
