About this Vadodara map poster
Vadodara, also known as Baroda, was the capital of the princely state ruled by the Gaekwad dynasty, and its map still reflects that role. Large palace grounds, parks and institutional campuses occupy open spaces within the city, giving the street pattern generous gaps. The Vishwamitri River winds through it in a narrow, looping line, known for the crocodiles that live along its banks.
The Laxmi Vilas Palace, completed in 1890 for Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III, stands in extensive grounds and is often described as four times the size of Buckingham Palace. The Maharaja Sayajirao University and the wide Sayaji Baug gardens, both named after the same ruler, add further open areas, so green and institutional blocks alternate with dense housing across the city.
The older city keeps tight streets around Mandvi and its historic gates, with Sursagar Lake at the edge of the old quarter. Around this core, avenues and planned districts added under the Gaekwads and after independence spread outward.
