Peat canals
Straight waterways and field lines inherited from peat extraction still shape parts of the town, running in long parallel strips across the map.

The map
Veenendaal lies in the east of Utrecht province, on the border with Gelderland. Its name comes from veen, the Dutch word for peat, and the town began as a settlement of peat diggers in the sixteenth century. From above, traces of that past remain in long, straight waterways and field lines, while the modern town spreads out in neat residential neighbourhoods and business parks.
Veenendaal later became known for its wool and textile industry, and for a time it was a major centre of Dutch wool spinning. To the south and west the land rises onto the Utrechtse Heuvelrug, a forested glacial ridge, while to the north and east it opens into the flat Gelderse Vallei, giving the town a clear edge between two landscapes.
A Veenendaal map poster shows that contrast well. The orderly Dutch street pattern, the older canal lines and the green mass of the Heuvelrug nearby make a composition that is both precise and varied. Printed in black and white, it shows how a peat settlement became a modern town, while still following the logic of its drained land.

A wooded glacial ridge rises beside the town, appearing as a broad open area of forest paths above the dense streets.
Post-war and modern districts form orderly Dutch street patterns, with courtyards, cycle paths and green strips woven between the blocks.
